You are looking for a Couch to 5K program.

There are good ones at both Spark People (free after registration), and Cool Running (free, but registration required to use the tools). Both sites then have 5K to 10K programs.

I used Cool Running's Couch to 5K program, and am now on SparkPeople's program to train for a 10K.

start with 1/4 to 1/2 mile and work up from there. do alternate days where day 1 is 1/4 mile, day 2 is 1/2 mile and day 3 is 1/4 mile. build onto those distances. also if u are a gym member then hop on the elliptical for a bit (8-10 minutes starting). this will build up ur cardio and not cause stress on knees from foot hitting pavement. (also dont run on cement...sidewalks and such. these give u shin splints - a hurt worse than anything ive felt so far. run on asphalt, roads, etc. it helps absorb some of the shock from ur foot hitting the ground so hard) let me know if u have anymore ???s
