Your microwave is very well shielded, so her odds of having an exposure to the microwaves are very low. However, if you're looking for a way to compromise. Put a stool or chair at a distance that you are comfortable with. 1 to 2 feet should be sufficient. Then if you turn off all the lights your daughter should still be able to see and everyone is happy.
Sounds like you're a protective mom. Good for you! Happy parenting!

It's not strange just protective. Microwaves have enough shielding that she wont get any exposure to the microwaves by standing in front of it. Compromise with her and let her sit a few feet from it. Even if you had an old microwave that leaked. Microwaves don't travel very far until they don't have enough power to effect you.

Well we eat what comes out of the microwave. I would think that would be more dangerous than standing in front of it. I really don't think we truly know the long term effects of microwaves though because they only been common in homes for about 20-30 years. My mom got her first microwave when I was in highschool in 1987; I lived on microwaved food for two years in my first apartment since it didn't have a stove. So far, no bad effects, but who knows?

You prpbably have memoriesof the eighties when microwaves were as good. There were some leakage problems back then and a number of the made the news paper. If you are really worried they sell small hand held meters to detect if microwaves are in fact leaking. I really don't think that you have to worry about it, but at the same you know she may be safer if she didn't stand directly in front of the oven.

I have heard that you aren't supposed to stand in front of the microwave while it is cooking, but I have done it all my life and don't seem to be suffering any strange reprocussions from it. I believe I would be more worried about standing in front of the tv than the microwave.

Even if there is no harm in standing close, you have every right to have her stand back. You are her mother, after all. She can still watch popcorn pop at a distance unless she has poor eyesight, in which case, get the girl some glasses.

I don't think there's any danger in standing in front of the microwave.
However, if you have a piece of mind by making her stand back a bit, why not? You're not hurting anyone or making her do something weird.
We all have things that we do that others don't find logical.

I don't think it is strange. I think you are being a little to overprotective though. If a microwave is that dangerous, where you can't even stand next to it, then why even have it in the house?

In the 1970s that was a problem, however it's OK to stand in front.
