I have wondered this about the Sunni and Shiite Muslims. I think it has to do with some grudge, like the Hatfields vs the McCoys.

Wish I knew, then we could fix it. Its happening in Iraq, its happening in Africa...I seem to remember seeing some secterian violence in other countries on the news recently.

My only guess is that it has to do with poverty and hopelessness. A few people in desperate situations gravitate towards a form of idealism, be it religious or political or racial (etc, etc.). The more extremists of these ideals feel that only their ideals should be listened to, and they seek out a target to direct their anger at...an enemy. Among that group, there is an even smaller group who feels that they are justified in using violence to further their idealist agenda.

Now, under normal circumstances, just about everyone would speak out against that violence. But in poverty stricken countries, or ones where there is some form of desperation, the violence simply escalates to the point where even those who would normally just live and let live feel they must physically protect themselves against the "other side".

Someone mentioned the Hatfields and the McCoys? That's a good analogy. It could start with, "You accidentally shot my dog" and end up with such intense hatred for each other that even a proverbial Romeo and Juliette couldn't stop the two sides from fighting.

I am not sure if you are talking about Sunni and Shiia? Or something different. In the case of the Sunni and Shiia, it is over differing religious beliefs. Shiia believe that there is a lost imam who was been hidden from the world and is about to reappear. Sunni believe that the Imam was not here and is yet to be born.

Seems like a small difference to fight over, but people get very touchy over religion, because if you are wrong about it, you are not going to spend the afterlife in paradise. That causes people to fight over little details. Its pretty rediculous unless you believe in your religion with all your heart.

I think that in countries that have low income levels, it is easier to get caught up in fighting for small things. In the western world, we are mostly concerned with keeping food on our tables and finding a better job. In the third world, there are no jobs, and most poor people have no real options for getting ahead. As a result they turn to radical religion, because it offers them a hope for equality in the future. Islam is a great religion, but there are many teachers in the middle east, who have perverted its teachings in order to gain a greater following of people. They place blame for the inequality that surrounds them on the west, and then say that it is because the west is from satan. Unfortunately they don't tell their followers about all the happy muslims living in the west.

Its just a case of poor people being taken advantage of, and being manipulated into acts of violence.

You might imagine people of the same race trying to kill each other..that's the story so far..I think once they make flags out of their individual neighbourhoods..the Boy Scouts are made into Tools of expediency by Corporations willing to exploit that naivety.
Just another set of colours.

That is a very real danger which we have to face. Most of these groups work on the basis of an emotional appeal to the public and have no real political programme apart from eliminating all those who disagree with them.

We no longer communicate---we just go to war. Sound familiar?

Why do people kill each other? What difference does it make over what reason?

People can always find a reason to hate. If it weren't that, it would be something else. It's the sinful nature of man and it's very real.
