Just chose a dark granite counter for a big kitchen and we are going with a laminate floor in shades of grey, white, beige very natural and we chose a color called jazzy sax, which is not a mustard but in the golden brown family. Very rich and since the kitchen is open to the main rooms we used a color called Tate olive they are beautiful.

First of all...congrats on the new home. That is so exciting for you!!! You dont' want it dark and depressing. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I would suggest a creamy yellow. It will be inviting, warm, cheery and make you feel great. Accent w/reds. Believe me, it looks great. I have that in my kitchen. My cabinets are painted white; distressed. My counter is oxidized metal (lots of color) and the floor is a granite look. Good Luck

Dark colors tend to be depressing and not to inviting. I would think lighten it up a bit so that you are not entering a cave when your entertain in the kitchen.
Maybe a lighter brown sugar with texture.

What about beautiful aqua colored walls with a chocolate hardwood floor? It's absolutely stunning and won't stale date any time soon. The aqua with the honey would be very classy.
