Most companies that advertise "free" credit reports are trying to sell you a credit monitoring service. If you join, the report is free. However, a law was passed in the last 1-2 years that states that every person will have access to their credit report on an annual basis at no charge. Since freecreditreport.com was already taken, go to:

www.annualcreditreport.com

They will not give you your credit scores free, but you will get a copy of all of your credit reports to review. This is a valuable tool. Take advantage of it.

If you are in the US you can get a free, really free, copy of your crdit report from each of the three credit reporting bureaus once a year just by requesting it. Also, any time you are denied credit the denial letter will list the credit bureau(s) used in making that decision, and you can request a free, really free, copy of your credit report from any ceedit agency listed on the letter within 30 days.

Go to
www.ftc.gov
this is the federal trade commission and they have a link that takes you to your free credit report, that is really free.
If it is your first time, go ahead and get the free one from all three agencies to check them out.
Then set your reminder on yahoo calendar to remind you every four months, to obtain one from a credit bureau and start rotating them, to keep an eye on things.
For instance, set the calendar to get your credit report from Experian every April, then from TransUnion every August and then from Equifax every December.
Also, if you run into trouble with the credit bureaus and need to report them. You do that on the FTC website.
The FTC also lets you know about all of the scams and any info you need to know.
Remember, you still have to pretty much purchase your FICO score.
