She has had Duchess since she was about 4 weeks old. My grandmother has been with her all day everyday for 13 years, what are some physical characteristics.

First of all, I want to express my condolences on the passing of your grandmother. You are grieving and yes the pet she left behind can grieve also. Some pets grieve and are able to recover. Others do not. Duchess has known the companionship of her owner all of her life. Do not be surprised if she changes her eating and sleeping habits. Keep an eye on her and spend time with her, to help her through this time. If you notice her not eating at all or refusing water, take her to the Vet right away. Dehydration in animals happens very quickly and can lead to life threatening problems. Good luck, and God bless.

Duchess will grieve for about six weeks and probably not eat much. You have to give her extra attention and love and lots of it. They do get depressed just like humans, only they can't express that in words. Even if she gets you up in the night or early morning, play with her and fuss her. Best of good wishes and I'm sorry about your gran.

Naturally the dog will be grieving, she may be off her food and have tummy problems, if you are worried about her physical symptoms take her to the vet.

She may need a lot of loving and in return she will love you back, or if you don't want the responsibility perhaps a friend of your grans might like to look after her.

She will be quiet, off her food and probaly still looking for your grandmother to come in the room, it so upsetting for them to loose ther companion who they look to for love she will need extra snuggles now and a few treats, you might think of putting an item of clothing of your granmothers in her basket so she still has the sense of her pressence by her, sorry for your loss hope you and duchess can see each other through the grieving process.. x

Being a little withdrawn, moping around, off food. The best cure is lots of fuss and cuddles - make the dog feel part of your family and loved even though they have lost the most important person in thier lives.

When my grandmother died a year ago, her dogs would eat, but they would just walk around looking for her. When my grandfather would come home, they would run to her side of the car, expecting her to be there. They would also sleep on her side of the bed.

If you can get something of your grandmothers... an article of clothing that may still have her scent it may help ease her if she really is greiving. Eventually she will come around but if she's spent her whole life with your grandmother it's going to take a bit of time.

Dogs get depressed too. The dog may go off her feed, act lethargic, pace as if its looking for something/someone. Give the dog lots of love.If it hasn't been seen by a vet for a while you may want a vet to check it over too..

pining, howling, whimpering, not eating, listless. Don't be suprised if she passes away too soon. I don't mean to be insensitive but when animals have a very close bond with heir owners and the owner dies the animal sometimes soon follows after.
Sorry about your Gran.
