Are there any stretches I can do before hand that may help, or something I can do while running that would lesson the tightness?

The muslce you are refering to is the tibialis anterior. This muscle is used to flex your foot up.

It is not easy for me to describe this stretch, so I will send you some links:

The first one has a picture. I bend my legs back in that manner, but in the siiting position, doing both sides at the same time. Hope this helps.

Well you could do more leg stretches before and then after you run you should just keep walking and do more stretches but not as many as you do before running distances. When your muscles in your shins get tight that means you working your body.

This could be excess lactic acid kicking in or it could simply be your muscles are too cold jumping straight into this exercise and need to be stretched and warmed before doing so.

Simple calf stretches and jogging lightly on spot will warm your muscles up and making sure you're not too near the air-conditioning in your gym is a handy tip too! And definitely do not forget to stretch straight away afterwards and do "do" your cool down routine...this will definitely help!

If unsure, just ask a trainer when you're in next. Or if you don't belong to a gym, a leisure centre attendant when you go swimming next, will be able to help you, no problem.

Try this:

Feet directly below your butt, squat down. Your butt should almost be touching your heels.
Grab a pole, or something you can hang on to and pull yourself towards it. Its hard to describe, but it works.

If you are really brave, you can do a polar bear excercise. Fill up a garbage can with water and ice up to about mid thigh. Stay in for about 10-15 minutes. It sucks at first, but helps the recovery.

This is lactic acid build up. an indication of overwork and a poor circulation.
