I don't think your question is definitely aiming at the population of today's India. And if it is then... well... it shouldn't be. China is the most populous country in the world, but that has nothing to with its social history or religion (or indeed lack thereof in many areas). As far as religion goes in India today, there are so many living together in a pluralist society that the 'greatness' of the nation or its population can't really be questionned from just one perspective. The extremes of rich and poor can be one factor contributing to its population growth, but then so can the religious views across the board which are generally against abortion, and these are just two reasons amongst many. About a few thousand years ago, India was this 'great nation' under Brahminism and then Buddhism under King Asokha also. Again, back then there were widespread views and even laws on reproduction, but in the time since then it's had no particular rise or fall - it has simply become a developing nation which is now recently emerging into a booming economy. Whilst one of its problems still remains the high population, India has moved on from the poverty it was once experiencing both under British rule and afterwards. This doesn't necessarily compare with the status it had as a nation in ancient history.

They werreat nation in the past, but these days, their economy is not strong and so most people in India can't afford the basic things from day to day, much less birth control.
