A Greek city state alliance under the King Leonidas of Sparta led roughly 7000 Greek, including 300 Spartans solider to defend Greece from King Herodotus of Persia and his 120000 Persians. Leonidas choose a small mountain pass for his defensive position to help negate the numbers of his opponent. After 3 day of battle a local Greek named Ephialtes show the Persian a way around the pass. Knowing that his position had been flanked he allowed the majority of the Greek army to flea, where he and his Spartans and a few others choose to stay where the fought bravely and died. Yes this battle did Happen there is a statue of king Leonidas to mark the spot. There were more than the 300 Spartans there but the 300 were the last Greeks to remain and they were wiped out after a very costly battle for the Persians. The other Greeks weren't cowards it was just the Greek position had been finally flanked and it was useless to waste so many in a pointless battle so the other units were dismissed to join the main Greek army and would play a big part in defeating the Persians later.

Must add to DC's answer that a traitor to the Greeks had shown the Persians to way past the mountains, otherwise they would have lost. The number of losses of the Persian army in comparison to the Greek army were also much greater, despite having an amry more that 10 times the size.

Yes it actually did, it took place in 480 BC between the Persian and Greek Allies, not just the Spartans, altho they did let the other Greek allies leave and stood to die by themselves on the 2ND or 3rd day. Some of the Greek Allies stayed and fought and were killed just like there Spartan comrades. They Persians defeated the allies by finding away around the mountain pass and having there 10,000 immortals rain arrows down on them from all sides.
hope that helps

Yes. There is even a monument built centuries later to the Spartans at the spot where the battle took place. Sorry but no monsters, Ghouls, or Zombies participated.
