The goiter is your thyroid gland, so if they remove the goiter they remove the thyroid gland. After removal, you will become hypothyroid and placed on thyroid meds. Sometimes the thyroid meds shrink the goiter and its not necessary to have the thyroid gland removed. Usually they only remove it if the thyroid meds don't shrink it or if there's cancer.

Goitre is enralgement of thyroid gland. While removing goitre a part of it is preserved for normal functioning.
