Personal experience - avoid Olympus!
Samsung make some very good cameras at the moment - anything in the range from 6 - 8 MP can be bought for about £89 - £149.
All have optical and digital zoom.
Would not buy from US - warranty probs and all that after purchase!

I took a year researching and trying out before I finally bought my new digital camera. It's the Fuji Finepix F30. It's compact, you can point and shoot or take the time to learn some of the more manual settings on it. It also have preset "modes" for fireworks, underwater, portrait, fast moving objects etc. The reason I like this one so much is it has the shortest time I've found so far between when you press the button and when the picture actuall takes. The delay is barely noticeable. The switch on and ready to go time is minimal too. It's either 6 or 7 megapix, has movies with sound (unlimited - so as long as it takes to fill the card up).
It takes XD cards and I'd recommend a 2gb one which you can pick up much cheaper on ebay. You might even get the camera on there! RRP was £230 when I bought mine in Nov 06, but I got it online instead for £180 simply by running some price comparisons and finding some online discount voucher codes.
If you need extra info/input and reviews from actual users,, here's the website I do all my camera research on. It's free to join and just pop into the forum and choose the camera manufuacturer/model and read all about it. You could ask in there actually how much it is in the states! Good luck!

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-P200. It has 7.2 Megapixels and the quality of the pictures is very good. I think its probably less than 200 pounds but not completely sure. But its is a very good camera. Has good battery life and has a rechargable battery which lasts a long time - over 200 mins while taking photos - maybe more. And over 400 minutes when in play mode (looking over ur pics) - and If you buy a large sized memory card - 1gig - it shouldnt get full for a long time depending on the setting u have on the size of the photos. I think the Sony Cybershots are probably the best because they are easy to carry around and are light - also have good quality images. Also buy one in the UK.

You wont go wrong if you get a Sony cybershot...ive had 3 different makes now but my Sony is by far the best...it comes with a built in rechargeable battery so you save a fortune on replacing the batteries...dont touch a Olympus i had the same 1 twice as i thought it was faulty as the batteries ran out so quick...but they were both the same...i brought proper digital camera batteries which cost me £5.99 for 2 and by the time i took about 10 photos they ran out of life...i then had a Vivitar which wasn't to bad but the picture quality was no where near as good as my Sony...i highly recommend the Sony cybershot http://www.argos.co.uk

I artwork at an electronics save and usually propose canons for hardship-free use. In australia we've a s400 it truly is 4mp, 4x optical zoom. good and cheap. not particular if a similar form is available the position you're. in case you opt on something slimmer with rechargable batteries, there is the IXUS decision. 5mp 3x opical zoom and a fabulous massive 2.5" demonstrate screen. pronounced as ixus fifty 5 the following. should be ready to detect both international. purely relies upon what you opt on to pay. i do not extremely like sonys they're overpriced and they application isn't very hardship-free.

I bought my wife a Samsung Digimax S800 (8.1 megapixels) for Christmas from Argus - £89.
Excellent value as it also does video and sound and has a large screen.

go into a camera shop explain your budget and what you want to use camera for, they will then be able to help you get the best for you.
I wouldnt buy in U.S.A because of problems if faulty or you need a battery etc....
Go and have a look around shop see whats on offer then buy.
