Don't get speaking in other tongues confused with the prayer language of tongues. But yet it should be done in decency and in order. As one of the Gifts of the Spirit, when the Holy Spirit is moving as "He" wills He will lay on someone's heart to speak in other tongues, but when that happens there need to be interpretation of that-when speaking to the congregation, which other tongues and the interpretation of tongues is equal to prophesying. (And the Gifts of the Spirit are for today - which many teach they're not for today). The prayer language of tongues is an unknown language (tongues of angels), which is also the same as "praying in the spirit". You may see people pray in tongues during worship services, but remember they're not talking to you, they're speaking to God. Or in between a message (as they began to pray in tongues-they're seeking the spirit of God-in other words praying in the Spirit).

Tongues is not blabbering, it's a reality...and yes many people use it for the wrong reason...It is a gift that we must seek God for, and it is available to all believers. It is not something that is forced on you, or you have to handle snakes to start speaking in tongues....The bible says as the "Spirit" gives you utterance.... And not everybody who speak in tongues is saved, nor do you have to speak in tongues to be saved....But as a Christian in order for you to have Power in your life, you must be Filled and Baptized in the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:8 You shall recieve power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, (and the result of it is) you shall be witnesses to Me......)

This power will give you the power to overcome sin and walk a victorious Christian life....Remember, the kingdom of God is not in word but in Power. But Love is the foundation and greatest of it all.

After I was filled with the Holy Spirit I spoke in tongues. What it is is a language that God can understand. Its praying and pleading .Usually about things that we have no clue what is ahead of us.God protects you from the evil that the devil has planned for you so how would you know how to pray for the future. When you pray in this language God recognizes this .Actually is the Holy Spirit relating through your spirit to God.I thought it was Bologna until it happened to me.Also the Holy Spirit will tell your heart what to say and do before you have to face the future. Its all spiritual. And i will tell you that the real realm is the spiritual realm .This realm we are in know is like a TV show you go through it you see it you discuss it and its over.Just like life. The main thing is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ because if you follow Jesus He will lead you to all truth.Paul said I speak in tongues and i pray in the natural at the same time. The Bible says I would like all of you to speak in tongues. But it is better to speak in a language that others can understand when ministering because praying in tongues only helps you. When I am in danger or sometimes i don't know how to pray so i pray in tongues.God Bless You.This is my experience that I wanted to share and thank you very much for this beautiful Question.PS This was not a coincidence you asked this question because i am searching for an answer and God must of worked through you so now I will pray in the Spirit [tongues] Thank You

Friend I will try to answer you, I am an Aposotlic Pentacost, Speaking in tongues is NOT the evidence of having the Holy Ghost, I don't see one Apostle slapping someone on the back or face & said repeat after me, The True evidence of having the Holy Ghost is to give them the WORD test, Because that Holy Ghost is to teach us all Truth, & lead us, & The Holy Ghost is actually God himself dwelling in a believer with Measure, & how can God deny his ownself. I have seen many speak in tongues, & walk away from the bible, so we have to see, at the end there will be false annointed ones at the end time, Now concerning tongues, I will disagree with you that you are not sure about tongues, Speaking in tongues is one of the 9 spiritual gifts, But also the bible say, Does ALL speak with tongues, NO. & there is a unknown tongue that a person can be praying very sincere & God can annoint that person to a point that they will be speaking in tongues, But that only happens if like you are praying by yourself in a room, But the Speaking in tongues in the Church is to edify the Believers, & after someone speaks in tongues in a church, then it is to be follow by an interpretation, of what was said in tongues.

Don't get caught up in this as its totally non scriptural! The gift of tongues was given in the first place so that the Gospel could be preached to unbelieving Jews in their own native language by someone whom the Holy Spirit spoke through so the speaker did not understand what was being said either but the hearer understood perfectly. These modern so called "tongues speakers" will claim to have the gift of tongues and that you must have it to evidence your salvation because it is a sign to them that they are saved. Not so says the Bible! tongues are a sign, not to them that believe but to them that believe not. Who is the them? Isaiah clearly tells us that the lord said with men of other tongues and stammering lips will I speak to this people. The "This people" the Lord is talking about are the children of Israel. The gift of tongues was only to be used when there was an unbelieving jew present and then any speaking in tongues was to be conducted by no more than 3 people at any one meeting and then it was to be one person at a time and then if there was no interpreter present then no one was to speak in tongues. Why have an interpreter? The hearer understood perfectly what was being said so the interpreter was there to tell the Church what was being said and the speaker as well. We are warned in the Bible not to believe everything that appears to be a miracle as the Lord knows that Satan can work them too. We note that the babbling of those who claim to be speaking in tongues is nothing more than some ecstatic gidderish unknown to be any language on earth whereas the gift of tongues was a known language but unknown to the speaker. This rambling and babbling and carry on in some Churches today does not even vaguely resemble the gift of tongues as given in the scriptures.

Lets take the questions in order:
Why didn't Jesus speak in tongues? According to the scriptures (see 1 Corinthins 13:1) all "tongues" are real languages - either of men or angels. Since Jesus (as God) would know every language, it was not possible for him to speak in a language he did not know. Plus, no one spoken in tongues prior to the day of Pentecost because that when the Holy Spirit was first allowed to indwell men and give them that gift. (See Acts 2:1-4)

"In Acts, the disciples speak in other human languages". Almost correct. Re-read Acts 2:1-12. In verse four, the disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in tongues. According to chapter 1 of Acts, there were 120 disciples in the room when this happened. The people hear them speaking (120 of them) and they identify 15 language amoung the 120 speakers. Apparently the other 105 were speaking languages not known to the people listening. Finally, Peter gets up and preaching - but it is in Aramaic, not tongues. Tongues were not used on the day of Pentecost to preach to the people. Rather is was evidence of the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

Fast forward in your Bible to Acts 10. You will meet Cornelius, the first gentile to become a Chrisitan. As Peter in preaching to him, in verse 44-46, the Holy Spirit falls on the Gentiles. The reason the Jews knew the Holy Spirit had fallen on them is that they begin to speak in tongues. That was the proof they had received the Holy Spirit.

Skip on to Acts 11, and the Christian leaders in Jerusalem are questioning Peter about how and why he baptized Gentiles as Christians. They wanted proof from Peter that these people really had received salvation. Verse 15-17 Peter says it was because the Holy Spirit had fallen on them, and he knew it because they received the same gift (tongues) that the original 120 had at the time the Spirit fell on them. Peter says that their speaking in tongues is the evidence they have received the Holy Spirit.

Skip one more time to Acts 19. You will find Paul extending the Gospel to another group, Greek in Ephesus. Once again, in verse 6, speaking in tongues is given as the results of their receiving the Holy Spirit.

This brings us to your last question - is tongues just "blabbering"? No. It is speaking in a heavenly language that is understood by God (the only one who needs to understand it). Read 1 Conrinthians 14:2 But to humans, it can SOUND like nothing but blabbering. Paul states in 1 Corinthians 14:23 that to someone who does not understand, it is going to sound like "madness" or nonsense. 1 Corinthians 14:11 says it will sound "barbarian" - which comes from the phrase "bar-bar-bar" - which was Greek for "blabbering". So, yes, it can SOUND like blabbering. But it is not.

Tongues is a prayer language that is able to speak the perfect will of God - in "groanings" that we do not understand (as Paul puts it in Romans 8). Our heart calling out to the heart of God. It is when this happens - when we let the Spirit interceed for us through tongues - that Romans 8:28 comes into play - "All things work together for good."

the apostles in Acts 2:4 were the very first people to speak in other tongues. it was a sign that they had recieved the Holy Spirit. speaking in tongues is speaking the language of angels. in 1 corinthians 12 to 14, Paul refers to it as a spiritual gift. anyone who doesn't understand a gift is the one who has not accepted it as his.

Speaking in tongues is akin to meditating. If you listen to Buddhist's or any other religion that uses meditation to feel closer to their god, they use a non-sensical sound deep in the back of the throat. When people start praying in tongues it is an automatic physical reaction for the body and mind to find something that does not need conscience thought but rather vibrates and lulls the person into a feeling of restfulness and self hypnosis.

Speaking in tongues is in the Old and New Testament see:

Isa 28:11,12 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to His people, To whom He said, ‘This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest.’ And, ‘This is the refreshing’; Yet they would not hear.

Jesus' words in Mark 16:17 'And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.'

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

From these scriptures all believers can speak in tongues when they are baptized in the Holy Spirit.

When we speak in tongues we speak to God in a heavenly language see 1 Cor 14:2 For he who speak in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understand him; however in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

Although not mentioned in the Bible Jesus might have communicated with God in a heavenly language also.

The Apostle Paul in 1 Cor 14:5 wished that all believers spoke with tongues. He himself spoke in tongues more than all the Corinthians - 1 Cor 14:18 He exhorted that we should not forbid speaking in tongues - 1 Cor 14:39.

When we pray in tongues we are praying in the Spirit. Paul exhorted us in Ephesians 6:18 to pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit after putting on the armor of God. We pray all kinds of prayers in the Spirit (we cannot do so ourselves) so that all things can work together for the good of us who love God and are called according to His purpose - Rom 8:28. This is a very good reason to speak and pray in tongues always.

I can explain it .... the speaking in tongues that is mentioned in the Bible is not the blabbering they do today, but the ability to speak in other languages. Simple as that.

If you look at the moment the disciples emerged from the locked room, you will find they began to "speak in tongues" and everyone that was standing around in the street heard it in their own language. They did not hear "blababoogerboo" like you hear on TBN, they heard the good news of Christ in their own language.

Left in the context of its original meaning, that's what speaking in tongue means. The ability to speak other languages. Go back and read those passages again and you'll see what I mean.

Speaking in tongues is in the Bible, but it refers to an actual language not normally spoken by the person and it even calls from an interpreter to be present to exlain what they are saying.
