Labour have come up with the idea that a yellow exclusion box around an ATM will deter muggers. Can you picture the scene ? 2 or 3 muggers are about to steal your money you've just removed from the atm, but one of them suddenly exclaims, "Wait, we cant rob them, they're in the yellow exclusion zone. We cant go in therre...." Will they wait for you to come out of it before robbing you ? Will that then become a plea for them in court (if they're caught). Well your honour, we did wait for him to come out of the yellow box....

Actually I can see that this scheme is a fairly good idea. I assume that it has been devised to make people aware of their surroundings. For example if you are at an ATM with a yellow box around it and you can see out of your peripheral vision that someone has stepped into that yellow box what are you going to do? Personally, I would cancel the transaction, take back my card from the ATM and confront the shoulder surfer who stepped into the yellow box. If it is a genuine mistake I am sure the invader would apologise. If it is a criminal they would most likely walk off as confrontation usually deters them from their actions. Its all about being street smart people. If you are aware of your surroundings and potential threats you take action to ensure your safety.

PS: I am not a bleeding hearts leftist "Its my right" softie but I am in favouring of empowering people so that they can combat crime safely. The Criminal Justice system cannot be left up to the Police, CPS and the Courts because the general public have to participate either as witnesses, informants, jurors, etc, etc, in order to make the system effective and get the villains off the streets.

What a joke - you can picture the scene :)

"Do not enter the yellow box junction until your exit road is clear" - the answer to a question I was asked when doing my driving test :)

Speaking as a happy slapper I'm terrified of yellow boxes and always stand at least 100 yards from them - I'm sure this will be a major success
