I won't give you a rating but I will give you my opinion of it but first several other people who know far more on the subject than I do...

That being said, there is no "must have" feature in Vista unless you opt for the Ultimate or Business editions which have most of the extra security features.
It has a completely revamped GUI, Aero Glass is visually pleasing and the 3D flip is good for about 45 minutes of entertainment per day, I don't use it for switching apps, I just think it's pretty to look at.
UAC can be annoying but turning it off can open you up to all kinds of security risks. The Vista firewall is still not two way by default and you will still need all kinds of third party security apps anyway. Most of the freeware suites won't run on Vista (yet). So far the only ones that run on Vista are McAfee and Norton. If you can get McAfee for free then it isn't half bad. Comcast high speed customers can get McAfee for free. Government employees can get copies of Norton Corporate for free.
Older programs for Windows 95/98/ME and even some XP software simply won't run under Vista and compatibility mode is still a joke. XP drivers may or may not work under Vista, it's a crapshoot but if your device doesn't have a Vista driver, you'll have to try the XP driver.
The registry is no longer the bloated mess it was, dll errors and dll files are all but extinct, Vista doesn't BSOD, at the most during an error, the screen will go blank for a second and will come back telling you it recovered from an error so no more annoying blue screens or restarts (unless you just have bad and/or old hardware).
People like complaining about the hardware requirements, well, look at it this way XP is six years old and if you are still using a six year old computer, it's time to get a new one anyway and why not get one with Vista. Give Vista a week, you will never want to see XP again.
Then again when it comes down to Vista or OSX, I think OSX is going to win that battle.

I've been using Vista Ultimate since mid December, and I love it.
If you are thinking of buying a new computer with Vista installed, then go for it, you won't regret it. However if you plan to upgrade to Vista from XP, I would recommend you do that online compatibility check on Microsoft's' website before you do, as Vista does not support many of the older hardware.
My motherboard is less than a year old, and it didn't recognize or support the onboard video. I had an Nvidia AGP card laying around that I was able to use, so I didn't care about the onboard video.

Well,it depends on what all kinds of OS you are used to and what you expect.
What does Vista offer that anyone thinks is super? If it is effects..forget vista just have a view of xgl in linux.
And for security and other matters nothing beats the collective effort of many linux distros..

It has only been out for about 10 days so I don't think anyone really knows for sure yet. I am sure it has some bugs to work out so I would wait awhile before upgrading. Wait until it has been out a few months so manufacturers have time to writr\e good drivers for it.
