You do not have to file taxes if you receive no income, however, if you're married and your spouse earns an income, you can be claimed as a dependent to make the total amount of taxes owed as a family less.

For more info you can check out www.irs.gov

If you have a spouse who has income, then you'd almost surely come out ahead to file a joint return.

If you are a single mom, with NO reportable income, then you don't have anything to file on, so no, you don't have to file.

And for the person who said that you should file because you might be eligible for an earned income credit - you only get that if you have earned income. So if you had some earned income (from a job) but just a little, it would make sense to file and you'd get something from EIC, but if you didn't work at all, then no.

You don't say how you make a living. If you are married, you and your husband can file jointly and it stands to reason that your lack of income would reduce your combined tax liability.
If you are a Single stay at home mom, and you had no income, even though you aren't required to file a return, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a Federal / State return for your own records. Over the years I have had clients have big Problems with their State Taxing Authority, many years later and the taxpayer was unable to produce something which they never had! State tax refunds in my State are still being declined pending the production of tax returns as far back as 1989.......Better Safe than Sorry

good luck & blessing

if u have not made any income no u do not have to, however, if u made any income at all from any source ie child care, house cleaning, mowing yards, i have one client she did pressure washing....
and u have a dependent or 2 making you eligible for earned income credit ...it is actually in your best interest to file the income you recieved...we have all been programmed to keep cash payments "under the table", however with the earned inc credit (EIC) system set up the way it is ... not only is it what is supposed to be done reporting all income, but it is also in the best interest of the tax payer....
one of my "mom" clients watches 2 children during the week and cleans houses on weekends...she makes about 12250 a year...we doo a schedule c filed as her own business...she has 2 dependents, the EIC for this is 4536.00 and from this she pays her self employment tax which is paying into her social security which lord willing will help her later on...so she is accumulating that and after the self emp taxes she actually gets a check for the difference...this year it was for 2868.00....
oh and her filing also enables the mother of the 2 children she watches to get the dependant care credit for paying child care some of my clients do not deposit the cash made into an account so i have advised them to keep a simple ledger, notebook and mark times and dates through the year and amt earned for back up and in my opinion...if their children r still alive and well...and not living under a bridge...somebody had ot be making money somewhere to feed clothe and shelter the younguns...
but i babble on.... simple answer no u do not have to file, but ya may want to consider any income u may have made off the books as it is supposed to be reported and it just may be beneficial

Income taxes is in the name 'income' there is a minimum you must earn in order to file. Now if your husband works ,you file married and jointly. I usually put in the space for job description,wife/mother, I also do our taxes ;-)
Just for your information: under 65 your gross income needs to be at least 8500 to file or married and 16500..if you want the rest of the numbers its on page 12 of the 2006 1040 booklet. You can get that booklet online at www.irs.gov.

Not enough information to say. If you are married, your family will generally pay much less tax if you file a joint return with your husband.

If you are not married and truly have 0 taxable income, there is no need to file.

If you have a husband then you will file a joint return, if not maybe you are on welfare or have other income , like child support. No matter what as long as you get money from somewhere, you have to file a return. Hope this will help you.
Also, if you are not sure, go to the IRS web site and check it out.
