You can't go wrong with a traditional discipline like electrical or mechanical. But if you want to know the exciting areas where a lot of jobs and scientific advances are happening, look at biomedical engineering and environmental engineering.
Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles to the human body, such as hip implants or pacemakers.
Environmental engineering is the study of our environment and the application of engineering principles to clean it up.
Both disciplines are pretty hot right now and promise to stay that way for the forseeable future.
Hope this helps.

Knowing that all engineering diciplines in engineering are always developing, though being a civil, I think the frontier lies in nanotechnology.
I have read about some amazing discoveried in this arena.
I also think nuclear engineering will be making a comeback, and we all know what people think when you say you are a nuclear enginner, lol.
