as I'm no expert on the mater . my answer is based on common sense . or my opinion . (which is more than likely wrong any way). I think the colour orange was around long before the orange. whether it was called orange i don't no . this is a good question . what i do know is in pagan times the colour orange was used and also Buddhist monks wore orange . now the question is did they know of the fruit orange or did they call there clothes a different name colour. my thinking around this did we call & orange orange because the colour had all ready been named . for exp if the colour already excisted it could be exp jabtal . then when the frut was descoverd we would'ent call it orange we would call it jabtal . so witch came first the colour or the frut . hope this is of some help

Isn't it likely to be the other way around?
Oranges are not grown in the UK therefore asuming you are referring to the english word 'Orange'. Then it's more likely the fruit was named after the colour, not the colour named after the fruit.

It's the 'ol what came first - the chicken or the egg!

The name 'orange' derives from 'auranja' after aur for gold (Webster). The metal (element) gold likely predated the fruit orange. Perhaps whoever coined the phrase 'money grows on trees' was looking at a fruited orange tree.

I'd say they called the fruit after the colour, not the other way round.

a brown? a yellow? I think calling it a peuce or magenta (depending on it's actual colour) would be nicest.
