My BA flight was delayed 4 hours because of a fuel leak (we were taxi-ing to the runway when some passengers drew the attention of the oblivious cabin crew to a stream of fuel gushing out of the wing - we were then kept on board at the decision of the pilot for 4 hours while engineers repaired it). Am I entitled to any compensation? (I faxed and emailed BA, but received no reply at all.)

In theory, yes you should be entitled to compensation, but you don't give enough details. Have a read of this: http://europa.eu.int/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexplus!prod!CELEXnumdoc&lg=en&numdoc=304R0261 (it's dry reading).

I don't know what the situation is when you're already onboard the plane.

If you missed a connecting flight, you might be able to get some compensation, but if you simply arrived at your proper destination only 4 hours late, your chances of getting any compensation are pretty low. Writing an email as you did is a good place to start but don't get your hopes up. Mechanical delays are something that happen to all airlines and it's one of the risks you take when travelling. Your ticket entitles you to safe travel between point A and point B, no more.

By the way, if a plane will be repaired after boarding, the passengers are usually kept onboard. They usually only let you off if the plane will be changed. That's because it is too hard to estimate how long the repair will take and assemble all the passengers back up when it is time to go.

There was a fuel leak and you all were kept onboard--hostage--whilst it was under repair???!!! That is outrageous (in a literal sense of the word). Are you *certain* it was fuel, and not water or something else? I can't imagine a pilot, who scraps take-off due to a leak, would jeopardize passenger safety by not releasing them during the repair. If you know for fact it was fuel, then you should ring your local news media.

I can understand you wanting to receive compensation. I would too. It is so rude and such bad service of them not to reply to you. I think however that compensation is only given for delays of 6 hours or more . For 6 hours delay they give a voucher for a snack. The delay compensations are really mean. Imagine if you have kids to amuse all that time as well.I would keep onto them all the same.

merely been presented, (and could in all probability settle for) £280 from Thomson airlines for a 13 hour postpone Menorca to Manchester. It replaced into that quantity each and each for my better half and that i and the place they did take the piss replaced into that it took around 4 months in the previous paying. It replaced right into a technical fault and it form of feels a authentic looking volume however the letter does say 'we grant' so whether the quantity 'presented' is contestable i'm undecided. There could have been around 2 hundred human beings on the flight, some with young infants of direction so Thomson would be down around £70,000

You have to ask yourself what you would prefer. Fly on a safe aeroplane or one with a fuel leak ? Get over it and be glad it was spotted before you got airbourne.
