Doesn't sound like a class act, even if it's a joke. I would read some embedded anger there, in that comment, though.

Was he teasing or was he serious? I tease my wife a lot saying "i'll knock you out" , generally followed by some smart remark like "and then take advantage of you". Now, I have to be careful where I say it because other people that doesn't know me might take it serious when it's not. My wife knows I'm joking and that I would never hurt her in any way. Soooo one has to look at the context of who, what, when, how and why it was said and decide if it was said as a joke or not. If not then run like hell and tell someone that can do something about it.

Well like Steph says "depending on his tone" all you have to do is listen to his tone of voice and his facial expressions the way to tell is by the look in his eyes. And lets all hope that he is only joking but if he ever lays a hand on you then my advice is get the hell out of there and go to a battered women's shelter and get an order of protection against him.

I wouldn't write it off as just a joke, no matter what his tone was. I had this rather creepy guy hitting on me once, and during a chat session I mentioned that my carpal tunnel was acting up, and he said he was glad to see me again but sorry that I was in pain. I joked that he couldn't technically "see" me, and that the wrist was more annoying than painful, and he -no lie- said "well, I could always break it for you". I blocked him and broke off all contact after that, and one month later he was married; I found out that his wife left him barely two months afterward and was accusing him of abuse.

I wouldn't just pass this off without second thoughts.. you should look at how he is with you to determine if that's what he has in mind for you.. like wanting you isolated from all other people or if he has to constantly check up on you and different things like that are good ways to tell if another has the intention to abuse you...

you guys are taking this too seriously. if he's joking there is probably not any truth to it, unless he says it very often. i've heard friends joke about it before and they would NEVER do that to a woman. if he keeps saying it or says it angrily then run, but sayin it here and there in a joking manner is not a big deal.

He is probably telling the truth even if he says it in a joking way. Might want to distance yourself from that one.
