Just wondering why patients are offered ice cream after surgery? Saw it on films (US films) quite a lot and am wondering if that actually happens in real life. Definitely does not happen at hospitals in my country.....

That is so not true. I had two surgeries last year, none of them offered me an ice cream. Don't trust everything that appears on the screen. What if the patient was lactose intolerant or something and doctor just scooped a huge spoon of ice cream into his mouth? I don't think that's happening.

It is used after surgery in the tonsels, pharynx etc. Ice cream is cold and soft and -opposite to foods which are warm and not soft- it doesn't cause hemorrhage(bleeding) to the still not healed wounds.

maybe mostly with removal of tonsils because it helps sooth it and reduce the swelling, yes it happens
