The word "Allah" differs from the word "God"."Allah" is the Arabic name of the almighty god,"god" can be used for almighty god or other gods and idols, you may think that this word came with Islam, no thats not right this word was used by Arabs long ago before Islam,no man ever dared to claim that he is "Allah",otherwise they claimed to be gods, because all of them knew that "Allah"is the almighty one in heaven.however they were worshiping other gods among with him.

(al 'ankabot) 61 - If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded Away (from the truth)?

(maryam) 65 - Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and of all that is between them: so worship Him, And be constant and patient In his worship: knowest thou of any who is worthy Of the same name as he?

You almost have it. The word Allah simply means the God. The word used for the idols gods was ilah. They knew of Allah from the days of Abraham (pbuh) the Kaabah (the black cube) in Makkah was built by Ishamael (pbuh) and Abraham (pbuh).

The pagans intially used these idols as intermediaries between them and Allah and then eventually worshipped the idols.

To put it simply yes the knew of Allah but worshipped their idols (ilah).

ALLAH is the name for the One God out there whom all monotheists believe in. The same 'greatest power' / 'Almightly'. The difference is that ALLAH is a genderless word. Allah is neither female nor male. Where as in English, God has a female equivelant which is 'Goddess'. In a way, 'ALLAH' is more specific than 'God'.

as i think in past the ancient Arab believe in Allah but they choose people to send their wishes to Allah those chosen people say that they Gods
but when Mohamed came and say to them that their is one God who is Allah they admit this but didn't believe in Islam
so to end ,i think that the word Allah is used for the Islamic religion only nowadays
