Depends on traffic I went down to Northern San Diego this past Saturday evening and it took me a little more than 2.5 hours and I wasn't.
Tip: Take Patience and plenty of time.

The LA area is huge, and San Diego is a fairly large city as well - so it depends on exactly where you are starting and ending your trip. It can take two hours or more to get through LA, so for example, San Fernando Valley (north end of LA) to South San Diego can take 4-5 hours or more in heavy traffic, while you might be able to make it from Long Beach to Carlsbad in only an hour and a half on a good day.

Suggest you get your exact addresses and plug them into Yahoo Maps, so that you can find out your exact mileage.

There are 2 routes:
1.The scenic leisurely drive strolling along the coast or
2.The business appointment power drive on the interstate

#2. Takes maybe 2.5 to 3 hours
#1. Takes maybe 4.5 hours

I would pick door number 1....Good Luck..

It takes two hours if you leave on a weekend morning by 7am. I wouldn't recommend leaving during a weekday unless it's a holiday as it has taken me up to 4 hours during a regular weekday.
