julia4eve - I think u misunderstood his question!!!!
MOST Americans think EVERYTHING about america is wonderful and the best in the world and that every other country is envious of them, no reason to suppose they would view their military any differently. However, most of the world DOES NOT share this view and actually laugh at them for being so ignorant and up themselves
Evan - your point regarding vietnam is ludicrous - u had double the firepower and triple the technology and weapons, yet u STILL couldn't win it!! i wouldn't say that makes America the better side, would u?

Well we build all of there systems, and with all system human error can be disastrous. How ever I do not believe that any standing army would want to go toe to toe with the American War Machine. We have the means, the people, the will to fight. Yes fighting a none standing army has it's difficulties, because that army is of the civilian nature. As the resent case of friendly fire where a British soldier was killed, these type of thing will happen, however the war will continue. But Our US Army or Military is the best and baddest standing army ever in the history of mankind, and until some other country shows us other wise we will always be.
I am proud I take part in building the best War ships in the world. We have the best Navy in the world, sorry but our military personal are the greatest and will follow orders even if it seam unethical to others

I feel sorry for people like you. I really do.
In the United States, we are lucky to have one news program that presents "FAIR AND BALANCED" reporting. That is Fox News. Until I started watching, I didn't realize how incredibly biased the mass media (overwhelmingly Liberal) is.
You think the way you do because, in your whole life, you have only seen one side of the story.
If there is any way you can get Fox News where you are, I urge you to watch The O'Reilly Factor. It will be like someone has taken the blinders off you.
Now, to answer your question more directly. We think our military is so wonderful because they:
1) Have an incredibly difficult task wherever they are sent.
2) Often have to work in conditions that are far more primitive than what they are used to.
3) Are frequently mistreated by the local population who knows that our gentlemenly soldiers won't retaliate (example: In Iraq, they have dug countless sewers for the locals. Instead of being grateful, the locals would sometimes throw rocks or even sewage at them. Our soldiers have to endure this because they know the people are too ignorant to know better).
4) Are generally very patriotic, and appreciate the good work they are doing.
5) They often give their own time and money to the locals, not just as a goodwill gesture, but because they are genuinely kind and compassionate people.
Is all of this foreign to you? Of course it is. Your mass media will never tell a fair and balanced story.

Yes, and the casualties they are capable of inflicting on the other side are way more than most of the militaries in the world. Look at how many Vietnamese (North) died in Vietnam compared to Americans. Look at how many Iraqis have died compared to Americans. Friendly fire is present in *any* war. It is a testament to how few casualties we suffer that those numbers are close AT ALL. Or compare American casualties in the world wars. Or really any war (excluding the Civil War). Also, keep in mind the techological capabilities of our military versus the majority of the militiaries in the world. I think there is a pretty strong argument that the United States has one of the best militaries in the world if not the best.

Green on Green incidents are regrettable but happen very rarely. Even in your link it took mutliple conflicts from different countries to fill a page.
Fact is, there is NO OTHER MILITARY on EARTH who can do what we have done.
Let's first look at Afghanistan. We launched a military strike within hours of notification and sustained that fight even though there were no sea port accesses. Everything was done by AIR. We were on the ground and fully operational within the first 96 hours of landing.
In Iraq, we moved farther, faster than ANY OTHER MILITARY IN HISTORY. We have sustained operations even after having convoys attacked and aircraft disabled. Now, the streets are relatively safe for ground movement of supplies and we own the airspace.
On the contrary, this is by far the most competent military we have had in US history and in WORLD history.

The US has some of the best trained people in the world and the technology they have is second to none. As for many civilian casualties, I do not hold much stock in counting women who take their kids out and themselves to be human shields. Same for men who happen to hide a cache of weapons near a hospital, school or religious building. As for friendly fire it happens we have lost 5 soldiers since 2001 (Canada) The first four deaths were blatant stupidity because it came out in the inquest how the pilot and his crew were given medically prescribed uppers by the US military to keep their edge and cat like reflexes. The 5th death we have had out the report is due in any day. But the long and the short of it is it happens.

U.S. Military seems to be at their best everytime they had a Republican President. For a non American like me, the Reagan Administration Military is the best, funny that Clinton has done great ways to weakened American Military might. And its ironic that a non American like me seems to care how much US military has dwindled.

The US military is wonderful. It is filled with women and men that love our country, they are not bad people, they dont want to kill, they do what they are ordered to do to protect our country.
Dont hold it against them because an asshole is keeping them in foreign regions that we shouldn't be. They have to go where this *** says, and until we can stop him the US unfortunately will continue to look bad to other nations.

Who said Americans think their military is ''wonderful''? I don't think thats an adjective many Americans would use to describe their military. How can any instrument of destruction be called ''wonderul''?
If you hear ONE American say that, I would be surprised. Let alone anyone from any other country, about their own military. The two words just don't go together. ''oh, look at the wonderful military..'', how would you use that? ''The military is just wonderul isn't it?...''
This is a nonsense question.
