Why don't you call the themeparks, or look on their websites? I'm sure they will have loads of suggestions!

First off, Universal and Disneyland (unlike in Florida) are many miles apart. Although some would suggest that you stay somewhere in the middle (although I don't feel that Lakewood or Downey would really be in the middle-- just check mapquest), I strongly suggest that you stay somewere close to one or the other, or both. You can spend a couple nights at one hotel, then go to another. Here's why: At Disneyland, for example, it is SO nice to be able to go back to your hotel in the afternoon for a break. If you have small kids, they can take a nap so they can stay up for the fireworks (and a nap wouldn't hurt you, either). Or you could go for a swim. Or just sit somewhere soft for awhile. You get the picture.
There are a number of hotels that are less than $160 per night. You didn't say when you were coming, so I picked a Saturday night in April for pricing. For Disneyland, you will want a hotel on Harbor Blvd, since those are the closest. My favorites are the HoJo (Howard Johnson), the Fairfield, and the Candy Cane Inn. Of the 3, the Fairfield is the closest. The Menage is also close, and it has the closest view of the fireworks at night (VERY close). It's not quite as nice as the Fairfield or HoJo, but a good location. Other hotels, like the Carousel or the Tropicana, are a bit cheaper but are basically motel rooms.
For Universal, the Sportsmens Lodge is an excellent choice. There is only 1 hotel within walking distance of Universal, due to the geography, and that is VERY expensive. So the Sportsmens Lodge is a good close choice.
Have fun!

Anything "near" the attractions will be more expensive. Try looking up the location of the places you want to visit then look for lodging in between. It will be cheaper in those areas.
Example; The cities of Downey and Lakewood are roughly half way between Disneyland and Universal Studios. Both cities are relatively clean, safe, and have many reasonably priced hotels/motels.

peedlepup's answer is a good one..he knows a lot of LA. stuff.
I think what you might possibly be unaware of is that Universal and Disneyland are a good distance apart at least in terms of travel time.
I think Disney has some Internet "coupons" for their hotel???You might check it out. Not too sure about Universal Studios...It's weird but I don't think a lot of Angelinos go to those places..I could be wrong though..( I guess they may have gone once at some point in time).

Radisson Canyon Ridge 4 or 5 star for $99, less than half an hour from Universal by highway. Ask for a room with a western/mountain facing balcony, they're huge!
