You're probably allergic to it. When exposed to an allergen that a person is sensitive to, immune cells react and cause release of mast cell and eosinophil contents (like lots of histamine and other inflammatory mediators), which produce bronchospasm (coughing and difficulty breathing)

I put vicks under my nose, and a little on the nose, and take deep breaths. For the throat, try sucking on honey. It will coat your throat. And try eating soup and soft foods for the next couple of days.
