To the poster of the question:
I would start by looking at various great dane rescues. Its much kinder to rescue than to purchase from a breeder. Not all breeders are responsible and ethical and unless your willing to do tons of research beforehand, I would avoid them.
Look up great dane rescues in your area on the internet, and try to get in touch with one that could maybe give you a few other sources.
You'll be doing a kind thing by rescuing a dog in need of a good home :)
Good luck.

Merles are beautiful and make great pets. If you want a merle you will need to look for a harlequin breeder. Be aware that merles need to be sold on limited registration and sapy/neutered. They shouldn't be used in a breeding program.
To find a responsible breeder go to the Great Dane of America site (GDCA) Also go to the AKC site and look up kennel/breed clubs in your state. Contact them and they can put you in touch with responsible breeders.
Make sure the breeder you select shows/evaluates their dogs, does all health testing (not just simple vet exams) and can prove it. Make sure the dogs are AKC/UKC registered and not reg. with one of the scam registries.

Go to the AKC website and look under breeders. They will list them by state, the ones who have pups. I found my pup (a Britt) this way. They even had the parents hip certs on line-it was abig help. Our breeder only lists her pups with AKC since she said she gets serious adopters this way vs "oh a cute puppy" adopters. With Danes, so many medical issues can come up you want a good breeder. Good luck!

If you find any breeders of dogs ask. Alot of breeders where I live atleast know OF each other to get you to the right breeder. Breeders.net has a descent database of breeders along with info on how to pick a responsible breeder. You also could consider a source like PetFinder to adopt one if its available if you don't have your heart set on a puppy. Beware of petstore dogs. I could go on for ours about the conditions those pups are born in and the problems they are likely to have but you didn't ask that so I'll shut up ;)
