A Green Card (the sort that you don't buy on street corners) is a great thing to have. It confers upon the holder most of the rights that US citizens have - the right to vote being the most notable exception. Its downside is that many people think it gives an unfettered right to live in the USA. You can, in fact, be denied entry when you come back from abroad. That is why, as one person has already astutely observed, it is a stepping stone to citizenship.
