If it is a fault with the TV you are protected by the Sale of Goods Act - the item is not fit for the purpose it is designed!
However, shops do also have certain rights - they may not refund or replace but may offer repair - this must be done in a reasonable time - i.e. a repair should not take ten weeks - that is unreasonable!
I have just resolved a similar problem with Currys - I bought myson a LOGIK 15" LCD TV for Xmas and it went faulty (pixellated) within a week. Took it back for repair and it came back exactly the same! Took it back again and they statedthat they were not allowed to refund on these items! That is bull - The Sale of Goods Act states that items offered for sale must be of merchantable quality - so you have protection.
The only exception is goods sold as faulty and it ismade clear that it is faulty or has parts missing. That is buyers risk!
It is also worth noting for anyone reading this in the UK that Currys have a bad record on this type of thing and the LOGIK TV mentioned above is being sold by them KNOWINGLY having a fault which cannot be corrected - which is why they try to repair and not offer refunds - the deal they have with the suppliers is a no returns agreement - by this Currys get the TVs at a knock down price and assume all responsibility for repairs!

legally retailers in UK only are obliged to offer a refund within the first 28 days. Infact if you demand it then they have to pay up as long as the fault can be proven.
Providing you have your receipt however, they MUST replace or repair the product within the first 12 months. This is true for any electrical product that is purchased.
This is a little known law as shops don't like this information to be shared (because the tight bar stewards will have to spend dosh!) and probably the staff in the shop might not know that.
My advice would be to speak to their head office, cause murder on the phone, then in the shop and failing that go to trading standards as a last resort. They will tell you to write to the retailer and to keep a copy, asking for a satifactory solution in writing within 7 days or you will take legal action.
I'm probably just guessing here that you bought it from Currys, dixons or some other DSG shop. Again... never go back, they are a joke!!

Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994 has an implied 28 day return for faulty goods which most retailers adhere to. You were 6 days late. Should be entitled to free repair or replacement under warranty though.

Which shop?
Some shops will refund it for you, others wont, however you will be coverd by the manufacturers guarentee and go back through them and they will repair?replace it for you free of charge.
Shops have to by law give 14 days, on electrical and then as long as the manufacturer guarentees it for 12 months then the above is possible.
Good Luck,
Which shop did you buy it in? I want to stay well away from there!

Usually a refund has a 28-day guarantee period, in which you should fill out the 1-year guarantee for the product, & send that to the manufacturer. If you've missed both of these, then you're not entitled to a refund.

You are absolutely entitled to a refund. No TV should be expected to have problems after only 5 or 6 weeks. You need to contact the trading standards office to check how the law stands where you live, but I'm certain it will be on your side.

yes you can. a lcd tv should come with a garentee anyway. and with you buying it in december it will automatically come under exmas presents that means you can bring it back anytime in till the end of january. i know this as im a sales assistant.to get extra help with this phone your local trading standards they will get it resolved for you.
or your local council should be able to help you, ask them if they have anyone you could talk to about it
trading standards link below
good luck
and the person that said the shops dont like customers to know that all electrical good are under garentee thats wrong for 1 everyone knows electrical goods come with some sort of garentee and 2nd if any shop was like that i wouldnt see the point as it wouldnt cost them any money, because you send them back to the manufacturer with a reason or code number as to why there going back and they mend them and get sold again in another shop as reconditioned.and they send you a replacement

Hi, yes it was against the law, your statutory rights are not affected, and as your tv was faulty they should have given you a refund or given you a replacement...go back and demand it, call head office and threaten them with trading standards.
Cheers

In the UK the shop isn't obliged to honour the manufaturer's warranty, but the manufacturer is! Even if there's no explicit warranty period, goods have to be of "merchantable quality", which amongst other things means they have to last for a reasonable length of time.
