For the past 2 years i have suffered sore throats, some really bad ones and some mild ones. Most of the times the doctor gives me antibiotics to clear it up. It is getting to the stage that i am REALLY fed up with feeling ill when i get these bad throats. I get them probably 4-5 times a year. I recently had one which has only just cleared up, which included an ulcer on my throat. Other times they are 'lumpy' red and sore throats. Sometimes, like now, i just have a dry sore throat. The doctor took a swab and said because there was no sign of infection, that it was pointless seeing a specialist. Why do i keep getting bad throats and is there anything i can do to prevent them coming? I really am fed up of feeling ill with them. Thanks a lot.

I normally try taking paracetamol and ibuprofen, but they don't ease it.

The best ways to avoid catching or passing the viruses and bacteria that can lead to a sore throat are to wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

This might help.

* Take acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen.
* Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per glass of water).
* Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
* Suck on flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
* Use a humidifier in your bedroom or other rooms you spend lots of time in.
* Drink lots of liquids.

Your immune system may need boosting. Take some echinacea every day, it will help build up resistance to infection. If you can get a combination of echinacea and propolis, that is even better. They are both natural and very good for you. Do you eat enough fruit to get your vitamin c every day? If not, take a supplement of vitamin c every day. You need plenty of sleep also. Soothe a sore throat and reduce inflammation and infection with a tisane of thyme, lemon and honey several times per day. Thyme is a powerful, natural disinfectant and anti-congestion agent. when you have a sore throat, wrap a silk scarf around the throat. The warmth will make it feel better.

Sometimes sore throats occur when the 'office' you are working in is warm and the air is really dry. So drink loads of water (or the like) during the day.

See your doctor again and ask him to if he does not recognise the symptons to let you see a ENT specialist to check for throat or Laryngeal cancer. (do not panic but being safe is better than sorry)
