It simply means the path of humans without Christ leads to death.

The fact that all people, without exception, commit sin proves that without Christ we have a sinful nature. We are lost in sin and cannot save ourselves. Does this mean only Christians do good? Of course not—many people do good to others. On a relative scale, many are moral, kind, and law abiding. Comparing these people to criminals, we would say that they are very good indeed. But on God’s absolute scale, no one is good enough to earn salvation (“dead, doomed forever because of your many sins,” 2:1). Only through being united with Christ’s perfect life can we become good in God’s sight. “Under God’s anger” refers to those who are to receive God’s wrath because of their rejection of Christ.

Ephesians 2
Made Alive in Christ
1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
Dear Friend,
The Aposle Paul is describing here the condition of the Ephesians before they received Jesus as their saviour. He is not actually saying they were dead, but is indicating that they have all received the Gospel of Jesus and have been saved.
The Gosplels bring us the promise of everlasting life for all who repent of their Sins and turn to Jesus as their saviour.
John 6:47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
Genesis 3:3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
God wanted them to leave this one tree alone as a symbol of his aithority, but Satan was jelous of Adam and Eve, and as we know he tempted Eve to eat from the tree as did Adam when tempted by Eve.
The bible says that god created them both in his own image, i.e. perfectly, and that if they had not questioned gods authority, but in doing so we became imperfect and death entered into the world: Romans 5:12 Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned—
Under gods own law i.e. Leviticus 24:20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so he is to be injured. the sacrifice of one perfect life (Adam) required the sacrifice of another perfect life (Jesus) This is why in John 3:16 it says 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. The sacrifice of his Son atoned for all sin past present and future.
So going back to the first scripture: John 6:47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life, Jesus sacrifice means that we are all able to gain salvation through him, believeing in him and acknowledging him as out king and saviour.
So this is talking about the Ephesians before they accepted the Gospel.
I hope this answers your question
God Bless

''1 And you did he make alive, when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins, ''
it means that we were doomed to die(eternal death) due to the sin full nature we were born into, but Christ came and gave us a new life. Made us really alive, free from all sin, pass, future and present.
We were dead through our sins and now we are alive through Christ.
