This depends on the road, there is no rule specific to London roads, only types of road in the UK. Urban built up areas have a speed limit of 30mph (48kph). Roads in slightly less built up area/wider roads have limits of 40mph (64kph) or 50mph (80kph).

Dual carriageways (a type of motorway/highway consisting of two lanes) have a speed limit of 60mph (97kph) thought this can be reduced in some areas, or during bad weather/traffic conditions. Finally motorways (multi-lane highways) such as the M4 and M25 have the top national speed limit of 70mph (112kph) though again this can change in some areas/during bad weather/traffic conditions.

London consists of a huge variety of roads, however in central London due to its built up nature the majority of roads will be 30mph only.

Most of the answers given already are totally correct, it depends what type of road you are on, check the local signs for more information.

Of course the speed limit has nothing to do with the speed you may travel at, which, depending on the time of day, may be much slower than the maximum allowed

In central and inner London (zones 1,2) the vast majority of roads are 30mph, but further out it is the same as the rest of the country with a mix of types and speeds.

it varies depending on where you are, best to look out for signs or if you can't see any signs you have to base it on how far appart the lamp posts are, if they are less than 40m then the speed limit is 30 because it is deemed to be a built up area. on duel carridgeways the speed limit is 70mph unless otherwise stated and the national speed limit is 60mph on all other roads.
