Long story short: I was on an extremely high dose of 3 different steroids about 20 days ago. Since then I've had hormonal problems to say the least, one of which is mild acne. I had a bump on the side of my nose, which I thought was a pimple, so I squeezed it. A small amount of pus did come out, but the next morning (and each sucessive morning thereafter) it has been worse, more swollen, and extremely sore. It feels hard (a lump the size of a pea), and then "squishy" for about a 1 inch diameter around it. It's red and extremely sore. Also, that side of my nose is stuffy and I have an awful headache, as well as a low fever and a sore throat. That being said, I get CHRONIC sinus infections and I don't know if all these symtoms are just coinciding with a weird pimply-thing. Could a severe sinus infection cause this type of infection in your skin too? Or does it sound like staph? I'm going to the doctors later today but it's really painful and I'd appreciate any help! THANKS!

That would definitely fit the profile of a staph infection, and is certainly how many healthy people (that is, even those who have not been on high-dose corticosteroids like you have) acquire skin infections. And if the initial "bump" was not an infection, it sounds like it became secondarily infected with some staph that may have been on your skin when you ruptured it, which is a VERY common scenario of staph infection. Definitely tell your doctor about it, because there may be an abscess forming under the skin.

I really do not think that it is staph. The way you are describing it makes me think that is a boil of some sort. I would not touch it anymore until it is assessed by your personal physician. You can apply an ice pack to it for no more that 15 minutes at a time like every four hours. I would take some ibuprofen or tylenol to not only ease the pain, but to help fight the fever. The sinus infections could be the result of it; but more than likely the boil on the nose is going to be the culprit.
I hope you get to feeling better soon.
