There are many types of J-1 visas, Arsen.

Probably you are talking about the Summer Work and Travel J-1 visa for foreign students.

There are many companies in your country that work with students such as yourself to help you work in America for the summer.

It's not possible to apply for a J-1 on your own, because you must work with a company that is a "designated J-1 sponsor company" that is approved the the US State Department. Only a properly registered sponsor company can give you a DS-2019.

You also need the DS-156, 157 and 158, proof of $35 SEVIS fee payment (if you are summer work and travel program), $100 visa application fee, you will also need official letters from your University regarding your full-time status in "good standing", your student "passport", a DHL way-bill for delivery of your visa (if the visa is granted) -- check your country's US consulate's list of specific requirements concerning J-1 applications. And of course, you need a job offer letter.

It's complicated Arsen, but certainly no more complicated than getting into University.
