RSVP comes from the French for 'respondez s'il vous plaît' (literally reply please) but is used in English in its acronym form on the bottom of formal invitations. As typical in Western etiquette, if one receives an invitation, it is polite to reply as quickly as possible, and this is what the 'RSVP' is requesting.

Resource Reservation Protocol:
Protocol that supports the reservation of resources across an IP network. Applications running on IP end systems can use RSVP to indicate to other nodes the nature (bandwidth, jitter, maximum burst, and so forth) of the packet streams they want to receive. RSVP depends on IPv6. Also known as Resource Reservation Setup Protocol.

RSVP is actually a French phrase that reads
"répondez, s'il vous plaît,". Repondez means reply and s'il vous plait means please. so in normal english, RSVP means please reply.
