RSVP comes from the French for 'respondez s'il vous plaît' (literally reply please) but is used in English in its acronym form on the bottom of formal invitations. As typical in Western etiquette, if one receives an invitation, it is polite to reply as quickly as possible, and this is what the 'RSVP' is requesting.

knowing the full form is pointless, but if u get a letter from Aunt Martha saying RSVP, call her up and tell her if ur accepting her invitation (or whatever) or not
