I am an absolute bookworm so this is a tough question. Since I have to pick something, I will choose
1- Night by Elie Wiesel which is a harrowing account of the Holocaust and chilled me to the bone.
2- In Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell: It is a landmark in light philosophy and the ideas put forth therein are still as intriguing as they were back in 1935.
Cheers.

Excluding the Quran, the most influencial book I have read recently is 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Cohello. It is a novel about self-understanding ad dream-realisation. It is both very realistic and very inspiring; truly a must read.
Peace

Pilgrim's Progress, I did learn to discern peoples hearts from reading this book, I realized every Christian has to go through all of the experiences this man did in this story.
All the people he did meet had a purpose to either help him or hinder him in his journey. Many of these people you could not tell according to their orations weather they were good or evil but their called names did tell you plainly their purpose. He does meet a lot of interesting people in his journey, and even though he had a family none of them followed his path to glory until he died alone. Then the family taking the same journey to heaven as all new meanings because the husband did go before them and lots of people along the path knew the husband.

Pappillion , because it is a true story about the human spirit and the value of freedom.
It is a story about a young french man, wrongly convicted for a crime he did not commit.
He is sent to various prisons , some on deserted islands surrounded by shark infested seas, yet time and again he manages to escape. Sometimes he manages to escape recapture for years at a strech yet sadly every time he is caught again & put in another prison. In total he has about half a dozen failed escapes (resulting in torture & solitary confinement) and more than a dozen successful prison escapes.
He keeps claiming his innocence and tried to escape again & again ............ finally after 25 long years , the french government realises its mistake and sets him free.
In the book , the one thing that keeps hitting me, is the immense sense of freedom that this man had & the extent to which he would go to claim his freedom.

Memnoch The Devil - by Anne Rice
it almost swayed my belief in christianity, the devil took Lestat through a journey to heaven and through time. asking him what Lord is the kind who would allow certain things happen to his own children. he even explained to him how he came into being a devil, and tried to convince him Jesus felt no pain on the cross as he and God were one and it was deception... etc. you just have to delve into it and find yourself wondering until you remember you got it off the fiction isle in the library.... good read though.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven. It has nothing to do with religion, just the stories of our lives. It was a sweet book.
Peace out.
