Many are automatically excommunicated through re-marriage after divorce, joining unapproved secret societies e.g. freemasons etc. In Ireland during the Easter Rising and Civil war 1916 -21, some bishops excommunicated members of the IRA.

Yes. My Italian grandmother. She married a Greek, this is in the early 1900s. Part of the deal for the marriage to be allowed by the catholics was that yes she could marry Greek orthodox but the children were to be raised catholic. she failed to comply so the Catholic church excommunicated her. The excommunication was lifted when she donated the Catholic church in the city of Patra. Amazing how god forgives the rich.

I had an ex-girlfriend that was excommunicated from the Mormon Church... I do not know details other that she somehow had gained access to the upper rooms of the main temple in Utah and observed things she was not initiated to and for betraying her 'code' was cut from the church.

There is such a thing as automatic excommunication---for things such as adultery abortion divorce.As i am divorced ,I am in effect ex communicated.Although I attend services I would not dream of taking the sacrament .

In the Catholic Church, one is automatically excommunicated for heresy, schism, and apostasy. I know quite a few heretics, schismatics, and apostates.

I know a lot of people that have been. Especially those who belong to a christian religion that doesn't allow a divorce. Those who get married again without superiors permission.
