Open Office

http://www.openoffice.org/

Other must-have downloads: Firefox (for internet browsing), Thunderbird (for email), ShockWave player, Real Player and so the list goes on.

Just thought I should add that if you create an Open Office document and email it to someone, they won't be able to open it unless they also have Open Office installed - a bit of a disadvantage.

If you just need basic office functionality, Google has a solution which doesen't require you to download a 500 MB suite like Open Office. In fact, you don't need to download ANYTHING! Check it out at:

Open Office is over 100 megs.

Abiword is only 8 or less. If you only need basic word / edit / hyperlinking capabilities in a clean, easy, free program, abiword is over 10 times smaller than open office and works fine on on older os like win 98.
