I don't know about you, but sometimes i find it awkward to start a conversation with someone. Weather it be my girlfriend, a friend, or someone i don't know. What do you think is the best way to open a conversation. And what sort of topics do you think are interesting and would make a good conversation??

The art of conversation may be difficult for people who are thinkers and not talkers. Many people have a certain thought process that analyzes everything first and then reacts. This causes problems with socialization (and is one reason math/engineering geeks always seem to be on the social outskirts at college). One of the best ways to overcome this mental roadblock is to take a speech class. Many community colleges offer them for very cheap even to adults who never went to college. Why attend a speech class you ask? First and foremost- it teaches you to think on your feet. Striking up a conversation is not about 'what' is the right thing to say, but just saying what is on your mind, and beginning a flow of communication between you and another person. If you can learn how to open up this channel between you and an audience, you will become very adept at opening it with another person. I took a year of speech and saw introverted guys with zero communication skills turn into talented orators- and even more talented conversationalists. That's my best advice to you. Good luck!

A simple hello or Hi! is a great conversation starter, also ask how their day went or how it is going and do like you really mean it! I believe when your sincere you get a lot further with a conversation.

Body language, asking open questions. This is what I was told by my communications teacher. Body language is the oldest form of communicaiton. The weather, school, music, movies, sports are all fair game.

Hello is always a nice start- and then honesty- and not so honest that you are driven to talking about how she looks or smells, honesty as in how you feel about the day- the news- the weather-- just don't bring up politics or religion--- those are killers for relationships, even after you are married.

Talk about the weather!

No, just kidding. If you wanna start the conversation yourself, look for an interesting piece the other person has (like a brooch or a bracelet) and comment on it. DON'T ask 'yes/no' questions 'coz you'll only end up where you started. And keep listening to them even if it kills you. Even if you have a "Me too!" story to tell. Believe or not, the person everyone finds most interesting is the one who NEVER talks about himself, but rather listens to the other person speak.

Oh, and if you can, always wear/bring with you an interesting piece or accessory. You can wear a cool button pin or a weird piece of jewelry. The point is to always have something with you that others can comment on so they can start a conversation.

Don't be too eager about your "Me too!" stories. Example, if the other person starts talking about electric guitars and how cool they are, and all along, you were a vintage guitar collector, don't say anything about it. Let them discover it themselves. They will be so impressed by you. Trust me.

Hello followed by a comment on the weather or some innocuous subject. i.e. "Did you see that Anna Nicole Smith died?"
"Wow it is crowded in here!"
"I like this restaurant but my favourite is.... "
