Someone thats not all there, someone that doesnt have any respect, someone that doesnt care about who they disturb. I had a similar experience like this. A man was beating on our door in the middle of the night, he had been stabbed, and we didnt know it. He was screaming help me. But we were afraid to get involved, because we had just moved there and it was a bit of a bad area. So, we just called the police. When the police arrived, they found the guy, and we had blood all over our door, and so did our neighbors. This man was the guilty one, by the way, and he was obviously not stable. He had killed a man across the street, so Im glad we didnt answer. Calling the police to handle it, is best.*

First of all, don't open the door. I'd ask him to go away before I'd call the cops on him. I might offer him to call a cab for him and he could wait out in the street, depending on what he looked like and how loud he was... some drunks act just silly and others act more aggressively. If he refused to leave, yes then I would call the cops!

So call a cab, or call a cop just dont open the door. I have a window next to my door that I open when I am home alone. We have had several middle of the night callers because we live in a rural area and cars break down or get lost and ours is the first house they see......I have even handed the phone out the window....but I dont open the door.

The advice that you have been given to call the police has been good advice...
you do not know who, or rather what the character of the person was.. they MAY have been completely innocent and harmless and you MAY have been perfectly safe to allow them in to wait while you called a cab... HOWEVER ... would it be worth the risk?
I don't think so and neither do you... you have your children to think of first and foremost.
By calling the police.. he would be safe from harming himself and others ( whether by accident or intent)
I am THINKING he was just a wayward drunk .. BUT still it's not worth the risk

He could be pretending to be drunk but maybe his intention is checking your home out for whatever reason. Remember your childhood warning "Don't talk to stranger." and now you're grown up, you shouldn't talk to stranger banging at your door in the middle of the night.

I would yell from inside the home for that person to get away from your door. If they refused to leave I would call the police. That is a very scary situation.

some stupid junked up person if I were you I would grab a knife and take your kids out the back door if your sleeping put a gun or a metal bat under your bed where you can easily reach it and anyways if he is drunk he is obviously slow so I bet you could probably take him down and if you haven't reported this to the police please do so right away.
