My Dad used to build them and he says to wait at least 2 to 3 weeks so that the mortar has time to completely dry and cure...I've never known him to have a project go bad, even though that seems like a long time to wait...

And start with a small fire...If you've got a problem a small fire is easier to put out than a huge one! LOL

I would wait 28 days minimum... run a de-humidifier or turn down your humidifier in the house too, it will speed up the evaporation of the moisture but open a window for 15 minutes every day to exchange some air. Concrete gives off fumes as it cures and it can bother some folks sometimes.

I would wait 3-4 weeks. Otherwise, you're taking a risk with the mortar (especially in the bottom and top parts), not being completely cured.

The last thing you want to end up with is a bunch of cracks that you need to re-seal. Just be patient.

wait until the joints bleach out completely 2-3 weeks and start with small fires at first. the main problem is moisture turning to steam and steam expands so when everything feels completely dry to you , burn away...

i would wait at least 5 days for the mud to cure. i checked around for you. check out www.rumford.com , frequently aked questions. that might help.
