If a person dies at home, an autopsy is usually performed. A pathologist usually does them if there is no foul play suspected. In the case of a suspected homicide a forensic pathologist may be called in to perform the autopsy as they are trained to look for subtle signs of intentional death.

When a person dies due to natural causes, there is no autopsy to be done. Natural causes are : Old age, lingering illness, sudden deaths without any foul play, ( as in death while sleeping ).
Otherwise, if a person dies due to : Accidents, murder / homicide
or anything that indicates foul play, then..
Medico Legal experts are called in to perform the autopsy. These are professional persons hired by the government to conduct autopsy on these persons mentioned above.
They are Physician and Lawyers at the same time.

A medical doctor usually a pathologist performs autopsies, only licensed physicians can perform autopsies.

An autopsy is always performed by a PATHOLOGIST in the United States. Others my witness, but the pathologist perfom it.
