Buy her a card with something heartfelt inside it. Then buy her a gift that took some thought. Such as a gift certificate from her favorite store or go to Things Remembered. There are some great gifts you can get there. You can have a necklace or jewelry box engraved. I don't know anyone that doesn't like something with their name on it. 'To Mom, Thank you for all you do. Love, Your Name'. Or get her a gift basket you make yourself of her favorite things. Then take her out to dinner at her fav restaurant. She can't be mad after that. That is if you can afford all that stuff. If not, then a handmade card, a handmade cake and dinner you make for her can be just as special.
Time alone with yourself and her is a very valuable gift.

Most moms can see through schemes like an open window. Be honest, tell her you forgot and the REAL reason you forgot (i.e.) occupied with classes, work, etc. Past mistakes can be compensated with corrective actions in the future. "Happy Belated birthday" cards seem tacky, so avoid them. If you got her a birthday card and/or present give it to her with a hug and an "I love you mom, Happy Birthday". Then take her to lunch. Then invest in a PDA, lol.

I think that the two of you can just go out to dinner together and then to a movie, later maybe go out for coffee or tea. I think being with your mom and having that mom and daughter time together, she will appreciate that a lot.

Offer to clean the house and do whatever she does all day and give her a day of rest. As much as you hate it, she'll think you're the best daughter in the world which you probably are now.

Do whatever you can do for her. What matters the most is that your mum knows how much her birthday matters to you.
All she needs is you as her lovely daughter.
