Tell them that you are attending the event, and that you would like them to attend it with you. Make sure you tell them what the event is, where it is, when it is, the dress-code etc. Have fun!

Do what a girl did to me....
Go to the card shop and have them make a custom invitation requesting his presence...then when you give it to him, make sure you look your best. If the guy is halfway decent he'll be up for it.
