no most people are not buying the most dangerous animals they can find most people are buying animals of a breed they enjoy. more people buy pits for they enjoy the look and quality of the breed. its the fewer people who buy pits for illegal purposes that make the media and create stereo type of this breed to the public.nice family pits who don't attack don't make the news.

2007-02-08 19:09:11 · update #5

a 7 year study showed that only 1.89% of attacks were pit bulls. pit bulls were rated 4th from the bottom of 100!! it is more likely to be bitten by a labrador or a cocker spaniel than by a pit bull.
don't blame the dog blame the owners. stop the hate these dogs need good loving homes like all the rest. any breed of dog can attack many other breeds all ready have and will continue to do so. if you hate pits cuz they are said to attack you should hate all breeds of dogs as well.even small fragile dogs have killed.

as for the 60% rate, no more vicious than golden retrievers, beagles,or other popular dogs. in a recent study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Society(ATTS) pit bulls acheived a passing rate of 83.9%. thats as good or better than beagles..78.2% and golden retriievers..83.2%
The American Temperament Test Society provides temperament testing around the country for dog breeds, and gives a passing score for the entire breed based on the percentage of passed over failed within total number of the particular breed tested. As of December 2003, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a current passing rate of 83.9%, and the American Staffordshire terrier passes at 83.2%. In comparison, The Golden Retriever passing rate is 83.2%.

The American Temperament Test Society continually ranks Pit Bulls better in temperament than many other breeds. The Airedale Terrier, Basenji, Beagle, Bichon Frise, Border Collie, Chihuahua, Collie, Dachshund(4 of 6 varieties), English Setter, Lhasa Opso, Pomeranian, Shar-Pei, Shiba Inu, Shih Tzu, Schnauzer, and Toy Poodle all score below average and many more far below that of the Pit Bull. Even though these other breeds temperament score is less than average many would not even think twice in their ownership as a family pet. http://www.pitbullregistry.com/unwaranted%20negative%20stigma.htm

sorry bout your luck Dave
but my info i would say is more correct as it being from 2003 than your out dated info from 1979-1998 maybe i aint the one who needs to get "correct information" after all

Nope sorry. Pits and Rotts do not have lock jaw. It's been proven that Pits do not have any "locking mechanism" in their jaw. Also any dog can kill and horribly injure someone. In a case with Pits it's not a case of the jaw locking it's just pure desire that they choose not to let go. Never heard of a Rott having lock jaw but I do know a little about them and know that lock jaw is not a case in a rott.

I know the above wasn't really a question more of a statement. My time is running out for this to be an open question. If you would like for it to stay open longer let me know. I only hope that I have helped open the closed minds on some anti-pit people. I know this debate will never truely end for most. Thanks all who left an answer no matter right nor wrong. Please remember that ALL dogs of ALL breeds needs our love and good homes. No dog is actually worth Hate.It is not the breed it's the owners. Blessed Be.

I love my pit bull! He has been through three levels of obedience and trick classes. I have read and studied about dog aggression and I know all about it and nowhere does it ever mention that aggression is genetic, it is a learned behavior. I have tons of pictures of him sleeping and playing with children, he absolutely loves them. To the people who claim that pit bulls are naturally aggressive, maybe you should look at the aggressive ones that you have been around and pay attention to who owns them. They are extremely loyal dogs and yes if you train them (or any other dog !!!!) to attack then it will. His number one concern is to make his owner happy, therefore, he will do what the owner wants because just like all other dogs, they don't know right from wrong. But if you look at the other sites out there you will also find another pit bull that hasn't been sensationalized by the media, and they are caring and sweet dogs that are the companions to little children and families.

I think the problem that can not be disputed is not which dog bites but which dog can kill when it does. Due to the pit and the rotti having lock jaws, this is where the problem lie's. It is not to give the dog a bad rap or the people careing for it. though that can happen. It is a physical problem with the dog itself. I don't think I would worry about a chow putting a large hole in my throat. I think the key word hear is life threatening. And that is just what you need to accept.

According to the Center for Disease Control, between 1979 and 1998, over 60 percent of fatal dog attacks were done by just two types of dogs. Pit bulls and Rottweilers.

No one needs a dog breed to attack. Get a poodle.

"According to the Center for Disease Control, between 1979 and 1998, over 60 percent of fatal dog attacks were done by just two types of dogs. Pit bulls and Rottweilers. "

Get your info correct. From the CDC website:

"Injury Center researchers examined data about deadly dog attacks that occurred during 1979–1998. They found that at least 25 breeds of dogs had been involved in the fatal attacks."

EDIT: I was commenting to Dave, not to the question. I was just quoting his comment. I have worked with hudreds of pits in my career and would recommend them as pets way before some other breeds.

I for one have been attacked by chihuahuas. My neighbor in Az had a freaking pack of them and the b*tch sent the entire pack of those oversized rats after me!! I was walking my dog at the time who was a basset/beagle mix around the neighborhood and the b*tch opens her door and sends them after me!! So no pit bulls ARE NOT and I repeat NOT the only dogs to attack. It is the people who make the dogs who they are. Just for the record I now do not like chihuahuas.

Its sad that people hold their NATURAL aggression against these beautiful dogs! I believe that these dogs should be required to be kept somewhere with a yard so they have a space for them to be territorial but I believe that that should go for all dogs that have overly aggressive natures. All dogs have aggression and always will! Humans have the same thing! It is totally natural and owners should just learn to be more responsible about letting little kids play with ANY animal without being catious!

I believe Pit Bulls should be put under at the first sign of agression. It is sad that they were bred with this instinct, but maybe we should hold those who did the breeding responsible. This isn't a case of a dingo attack in the bush. People are buying the most dangerous dogs they can find. They should be held accountable, same as gun holders.

For all of you who think you know ANYTHING about Pit Bulls and that they are bred to be aggressive, you don't know a thing. Don't be so gullible as to believe any hyped story the media and politicians want you to believe for THEIR own benefit.

Educate yourself before you spread ignorant lies!!! Pit Bulls aren't a problem, ignorance is! They are WONDERFUL, stable, intelligent, LOVING, and tolerant dogs!

I wrote this white paper/article regarding "Pit Bulls", BSL and supposed and dog bite statistics:

I believe, that its the owners of the dogs not the dogs. I have a mastiff/Rottweiler cross she's 7 no problems. I also have a Rottweiler 7 years old no problems. My babies crawl on the dogs, they even sleep on the dogs. However, if you hit me or my kids then you've got problems.

i luv pitty's. they are the best dogs.

i believe it should be the responsibility of the breeder to control the animals populations, and the council to impose strict limits on their breeding. i worked for many years at a vet surgery and pitt bulls were some of the best dogs i ever saw!

breeders should be limited on which dogs they can breed, and any dogs with saggression probalems that cannot be trained should be destroyed. dont get me wrong, i absolutely adore pitty's, but i think its better to impose extremely strict guidlines on their breeding rather than make it illegal, as many pitt bull lovers such as me, living in aus, now have no chance of ever owning one legally.

pit bulls are the best dogs ever! i adore them!
