The body releases a ton of chemicals into the blood stream that help the brain deal with the pain (natural painkillers). These, when mixed with some type of deep mental anguish can become as addictive as any type of street drug. My heart goes out to you and I hope that you will find some other method of coping. I don't know what that may be but you know that this cutting is only adding to your problems. Best wishes.

When I cut it was because I had underdeveloped healthy self-soothing techniques. Until I developed other methods to self-sooth, I felt stuck as well.

I can't say what else will work for you, for some it is art, others video games, some people turn to excercise, religion, eating, sex, drugs, or meditation.

Obviously some of these are healthier than others, but maybe some might be bad, but still better than what you are doing now and may act as baby steps.

It is also no surprise that many of the actions I listed have addictive components, cutting is no exception. Perhaps working with a therapist or even just a journal might help support your efforts to quit?

Great question. I cut for so many years. It provides a feeling that you can't describe to a non-cutter. The only way I believe to stop is to have intense counseling. Good luck. You can email me if you want to.

I am 14 years old an a cutter, I haven't tried to stop because it feels so good. I'd rather feel that kind of pain than none at all. my e-mail is amberrose.s@comcast.net in case you have any questions. I don't want to get into full detail on yahoo.

pain releases endorphines...endorphines make you feel good...thus not depressed and alot of times you don't even feel the pain...it is like a drug...but your brain releases it for you as a defense...without it you miss it so you cut more to get it.
