First of all the blank is to be filled by Carbon Dioxide. OK, now let us understand the greenhouse effect.

Have you seen a greenhouse? It is used to help those plants which require heat and humidity and is made of glass or some other transparent roof which allows sunlight inside and prevents the infrared rays from going out. If you enter a greeenhouse (even in midwinter), it will be very hot and humid inside.

Now, the increasing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (which basically consists of nitrogen and oxygen, with small quantities of argon and water vapor etc. and of course a little CO2), is making the whole earth a greenhouse! Sunlight falling on earth has several components including infrared, visible and ultraviolet radiation. As the earth gets heated up, the infrared radiation increases and it tries to go out into space. But the CO2 in the air traps the infrared radiation and global warming (heating of the earth) is the result.

Global warming can lead to melting of ice-caps, glaciers, snow on several mountains etc. and will lead to a rise in the level of the seas and oceans, submerging several cities and also leading to weather abnormalities.

Carbon dioxide and a few more gases are called Greenhouse gases.

Green·house Ef·fect ['grEn-"haus E-'fekt]. The effect produced as greenhouse gases allow incoming solar radiation to pass through the Earth's atmosphere, but prevent most of the outgoing infrared radiation from the surface and lower atmosphere from escaping into outer space. This process occurs naturally and has kept the Earth's temperature about 60 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it would otherwise be. Current life on Earth could not be sustained without the natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth’s average temperature would be about 60ºF colder. Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases.

The phenomenon whereby the earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane that allow incoming sunlight to pass through but absorb heat radiated back from the earth's surface.

Carbon dioxide , Methane etc r the main causes of this Greenhouse effect.these gases reacts with ozone layer & does'nt allow sun rays to go out so again the rays gets hited to the ground & the ground becomes very heats that sometimes it cannot be used 4 fertilization or sometimes even a small plant does't grow.

the main cause of green house effect is the excess of carbon dioxide (CO2). Green house effect- is increase in temperature cause by the penetration of infrared raditions from the sun to the earth surface. The earth surface reflect the radiations to the atmosphere which are in turn reflected back by the layer of excess carbon dioxide to the earth causing global warming.

carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor. These gases get trappd in earths atmosphere and prevent excess heat from getting out.
