Any dog can get heatworm, heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos, and mosquitos live everywhere. Therefore, your dog needs the heartguard to protect him from developing heartworm. Heartworm is EXTREMELY common in dogs that are not treated monthly with a preventative like Heartguard. The treatment for heartworm is also harsh and painful for the dog. Don't risk your dog's life by not giving him the medication.

First before starting it your dog needs to have a heartworm test. In most states heartworm prevention is needed for at least part of the year. In the states such as Florida that are warm all year round the prevention needs to be done all year..in states such as Maine, N.H, N.Y it only really needs to be done from May - Nov. There are some states taht are virtually mosquito free so dogs that only live/travel in those states don't need prevention.

Yes, all dogs need it. Any mosquito can carry heartworm and I dont know one single part of the country that doesnt have mosquitos. Is it worth the risk to not give it? Not only is it a potentially fatal disease, if you are able to treat it the treatment is expensive, risky and very hard on the dog.

My parents never had any of our dogs on Heartguard or any sort of heartworm medicine...HOWEVER I worked at a shelter for about 2 years and I have seen alot of dogs come in with heartworms because their owners neglected to put them on the medicine and when they got the worms the owner didnt want to take care of the dog anymore...Heartworm treatments can be VERY painful on the dog, they have to be injected with poison to kill the worms in the heart. they put the injection in their hip area and they have this treatment for a few months and it makes the dog VERY sore...you cant even touch the hip area. and alot of animals on heartworm treatment have allergic reactions to the poison or end up dying from it. so it would be in YOUR best interest to put the dog on the medicine...better safe then sorry right.

In Colorado we only reccomend heartworm medication during the spring/summer months. However, anywhere that has mosquitos has heartworms.

Please get your baby on heartguard! I wouldn't trust a vet that told me otherwise. Heartworms can be very deadly. I know my dog got heartworms one time and it was very expensive to treat. Also, he almost didn't live after that. The med. isn't very expensive, so I'd suggest to put your little one on it immediately, don't wait. I hope it's not already too late. Good luck!
