Don't worry, your dog is doing something a bit like sneezing. My beagle does this, and we took him to the vet because we were concerned. The vet mimicked the exact noise for us and told us that it was "backward sneezing". The dog is simply getting an allergen out of his system.
If you are still concerned, or if your dog has other health issues, please see a veterinarian for professional advice.

Often dogs "snort" or make sounds like that. It may be just some type of "effort" they are expending when they exert energy. I've heard many hundreds of dogs do that. It is also a way they clear their breathing passages of some small irratant.
Weight problems? You should be able to feel the ribbs but not see them. As with people, an overweight dog is often not a healthy dog.

I would suggest changing her diet. Get her on some weight control dog food. Don't buy the cheap food please! Stick with something vets approve. Sounds like she may be having a hard time breathing or she could just have a runny nose. I have a short faced dog that snorts when she smells food and sometimes her nose is runny. I would try changing her diet, give her plenty of exercise and loving and if it doesn't help, see your vet.

Hi Animal, Being over weight could cause problems in the future. i would start cutting back some on her feeding. Dogs get the same thing we do. It's her heart that you have to think about.I have 2 dogs that sort of snorte. They both have an allergy. That's want my vet said. A Friend.

I've been surfing the internet more than 2 hours today looking for answer to the same question, yet I haven't found any interesting debate like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.

I don't think anything's wrong. I had a dog (Rosie, R.I.P.) who did that. I thought it was endearing. She was a miniature Schnauzer, and I thought it was something all schnauzers did (schnauzer means "growler"), but it turned out that it was only Rosie. She was healthy, lived for a long time. She eventually went blind and it was really sad to see her getting lost behind the TV stand and other places. I'm getting sad...

My black lab does it too!!! It's quite embarrassing when he does it in a crowded place. I've been assured by my vet thats it's normal.

My golden Lab does it too, he is not overweight, in fact he is lean and very solid, it appears to be normal in most Labs.
