Split personality also known as multiple personality is a very rare psychological disorder in which a person has two or more distinct personalities, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behavior. The personalities often are direct opposites and dominate at different times, with abrupt transitions triggered by distressful events or memories. Each may be entirely unaware of the other but aware of unexplained gaps in remembered time. In psychiatry the condition is known as dissociative identity disorder. The term “split personality,” denoting schizophrenia, refers to an unrelated disorder in which the split (separation) is between thought and feeling.
The cause of multiple personality is not clearly understood, but the condition seems almost invariably to be associated with severe physical abuse and neglect in childhood. It is believed that amnesia, the key to formation of the separate personalities, occurs as a psychological barrier to seal off unbearably painful experiences from consciousness. The disorder often occurs in childhood but may not be recognized until much later. Social and psychological impairment ranges from mild to severe. The primary treatment is psychotherapy to help the individual integrate the separate personalities.

There is no such mental disorder as "split personality". People are often misguided with SCHIZOPHRENIA as split personality disorder. It is a disorder in which there is an increase dopamine in the brain. Actually, there is no exact cause of it. Scientists say that this is hereditary and it is the result of an individual persistent faulty reaction to his environment. Individual uses faulty coping mechanisms. It is a group of disorders characterized by the presence of apathy, delusions, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized behavior and hallucinations. It occurs in 25% of all the psychotic disorders and the onset is from 15 - 25 years of age.
I guess I helped you with that.

Multiple Personality Disorder or now called, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) usually affects people who have had traumatic instances in their lives. The majority of these instances involve sexual/physical absuse as children. The children then seek separate states of mind in which they are not being abused. Brain injuries and epilepsy have also been determined as causes of DID. Sufferers usually develop anywhere between 2-15 personalities although there have been cases where the patient experiences over 100.

A chemical imbalance in the brain occurs. There are many theories to this in the scientific world. It is now termed dissociative disorder. This is due to the fact that the personalities displayed are so unlike each other. They act as their own entities.
If you google Dissociative Disorder you will find out more.

It seems to often be related to people who were terribly abused as children. It's the brains coping mechanism to escape the pain and horror and allows them to get through an apparent "normal" life. At least it appears so from the outside.

its very very rare, it happens when someone is so very badly treated, usually as a child, that they have to take on another personality to have someone to save them.
