As far as I know this depends on what are your activities through out the day. Such as what do you read, what programs do you watch on television, what movies do you watch or what kinds of chat you have with your friends etc. It seems your thought process goes on even during sleep hence you are getting nightmares.
In my opinion you must change your choice of book, magazine or TV program you may be watching before going to the bed. Read or watch programs where there is no violence but some other materials such as comedy and likewise. Try to be cheerful before going to the bed. Before going to the bed, pray with your heart and urge God to assist you. you can pray to any God. But you must pray through out the day, meaning that you must concentrate on what you are doing and whatever you are doing and slowly push away thought which may lead you to nightmares.
The best is Yoga. Get some knowledge of Yoga and start doing it. You need to concentrate. There is nothing devil in the world but it is in the ones mind. I am sure you can do it and follow simple rules. Best of luck.

There are already some good answers here. I've been reading scriptures and children's books before going to bed and haven't had any particularly bad dreams for a while. I keep a picture of Jesus Christ in my room. I like portraits by Del Parson or Greg Olsen best, but there are plenty of great Christian artists out there. If you are praying before you go to bed, that helps. If you have a nightmare and wake up, you can kneel and pray again to be able to get back to sleep. I think one answerer mentioned to avoid watching things that might cause bad dreams. I make it a rule not to watch R-rated movies, and to be really careful with PG-13. In fact, my favorite movies are usually G or PG. If you are having nightmares due to feelings related to something traumatic in your life, you may need to see a counselor of some kind. If nothing particular traumatic has happened to you or around you, then just work on keeping your mind filled with good things and good music. Have a happy day, and I send you a gummy bear.

Get a dreamcatcher. Get your favorite incense and smoke the dreamcatcher with it. Hang it above your bed. Every night pray or meditate and then completely clear your mind(imagine all the thoughts in your head as letters and there is a hole in the back of your mind that all the letters are swirling out of, leaving your mind empty. Then close the hole up and but a brick wall in front of it to keep the thoughts out.) Now when you are starting to get really sleepy, say that you will not have nightmares tonight. You will have good dreams.
"Get Rid Of Nightmares
Most of us have had a bad dream. All dreams have messages for us. Our Higher Selves speak to us with familiar symbols and images to relay insight and warnings from the spiritual realm. Many books will help you interpret the symbol's meanings, and a few of my favorites are listed in the Resource Guide on page 263. I find it successful o confront the scary people and things in my dreams with courage, and just like an alter ego or bully with no real confidence of its own, the frightful mage canishes. I created and gave the imag its power and am equally capable of taking it away.
But there comes a time when images, the sequence, or the message is so frightful and traumatic that it scares us beyond action. Some people are haunted by frightful reoccurring nightmares that make falling asleep a fearful experience. If this is the case for you, try this ritual. You can also do this for someone who you know is experiencing disturbing nightmares. Just think of them during the process, and if possible, look at a picture of them as well.
Obtain a kit for making a dreamcatcher, which an ancient Native tool used to weed out the bad dreams from the good. The web of the dreamcatcher literally traps the bad dreams, while the hole in the middle allows good dreams in.
Burn a white candle for protection during the project. Play children's lullabies or other soothing music to remind you of the protected innocence that is your true state. Anint the pieces of the dreamcatcher with salted water to cast off former energies. As you make the dreamcatcher, chant
Bad dreams, bad dreams fade away.
You have lost your power this very day.
I call in loving dreams to help me (or your friends name) sleep.
By protection of Spirit, this spell will keep.
Attach black tourmaline, tiger's eye, or mother of pearl to your creation somewhere. Follow Spirit's advice and direcion; there is no wrong way to do this. Focus all of your intent into sending away the bad dreams and bringing in sweet, comforting dreams through the center. When he dreamcatcher is complete, pass the smoke of blessing incence around and through it.
Note: You may have unsuccessfully used a dreamcatcher to stop nightmares before. The difference here is that you mad it, blessed it for a specific purpose, and adorned it with added power by the gems and oher talismands that are sacred and powerul for you."

I used to have that problem in college.
I started chanting & praying over my bed right before I went to sleep.
Also, I don't have anything on my wall that's hanging above the head of my bed. Everytime I've done that it caused bad dreams.
And I don't eat late at night. That always causes crazy dreams for me.
Good luck! Nightmares are terrible. It's hard to get control of your dreams back...but it possible and it just takes some time.

Well, considering religion is all in your head just as much as your nightmares are, maybe it IS a logical choice of solution! Just about anything can do anything if both the problem and the solution are completely mental. That's why, for example, exorcisms "work" no matter who of what religion performs them; the perceived demonic possession or haunting is in the mind of the sufferer and is alleviated when they are led to believe it is.
Be sure to downvote this answer! Maybe it will change the existing body of research on the subject and retroactively make you correct!

there are many things that will treat the symptoms, and not stop the problem.
the use of a dreamcatcher may help stop the nightmares, but if it is a supernatural attack then it will simply be stopping the symptom and doing nothing to solve the problem.
what kind of dreams are you having, and have you had any supernatural experiences in the house...Played with Ouija boards, dabbles in witchcraft or the occult.
i am not saying that this is evil, i am a Pagan myself, but it can open doors to some nasty critters.

Write down your dreams, start trying to understand them.
There are dream dictionary's on line.
http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/
That one above is very good.
It might help you to understand what it is that you need to address in your waking life.
Also if you have any conciseness in the dream try and face whatever it is that your scared of.
This normally breaks the nightmare. And if you recognizes it in your waking life then face that obstruction too..
Your body is trying to tell you something.. Sit up and listen to it.

pray before you go to sleep. I have had dreams where I was being chased by pure EVIL (very scary) & found that having a set of rosary beads nearby or under my pillow helped combat these dreams. If you don't have rosary beads try a crucifix above your bed or on your bed side table.

Pray and Fast, and never watch scary movies or read scary books. Read the scripture. Perfect love cast out all fear. If you have any unforgiveness toward anyone, ask God to help you to forgive that person.

just keep on making sincere prayers to God. You shouldnt be doing that only coz youre having nightmares. We should always put in our hearts that God should be remembered in every lil thing that we encounter. May that be thru hard times or good times...
